Preventive medicine is crucial
From birth to the age of eight, children develop and mature vision, which them much more sensitive to any visual problem. Therefore, is essential to identify as soon as possible any anomaly that might slow or stop visual development, and start proper treatment. We know the importance of a smooth and pedagogical relationship with our youngest patients, which involves a calmer attitude on the part of children and a more effective treatment.
In this specialty preventive medicine is crucial. We recommend the first visual check-up maximum at 4 years of age, or earlier if there are signs of impaired visual function and, although there are no manifest symptoms, when there is family history of ophtalmological disease.
Strabismus is defined as a situation in which parallelism and coordination between two eyes is lost. There are three possible origin: neuro-muscular , accommodative or mixed strabismus.
In its origin, the treatment of strabismus is determined by prescribing glasses when strabismus is caused by refractive errors, by strengthening or weakening surgically extraocular muscles tha have been affected, or else, by combining both techniques. Strabismus should be corrected at an early stage to prevent the occurence of amblyopia and lost of binocular function.
Amblyopia or “lazy eye” is the decrease in visual acuity in one eye, which has not developed normally during childhood.
The treatment of amblyopia may be performed by glasses to correct refractive errors, occlusions or “patches” and pleortóptica. It can also be depleyed by pleorthoptics, which is a set of exercises designed to re-educate visual function.
